Am I the right teacher for you?

Services will vary depending on your experience and desired field of study, but I cater primarily to two types of students:
(1) Beginners, and
(2) working musicians seeking techniques they can apply immediately to improve their professional skill sets. 


Regarding scheduling:
Because of my unpredictable working-musician's schedule, single-lessons can only be scheduled one month or less in advance, and it will be unlikely that we will be able to meet on a consistent day and time each week. My availability is plugged into the booking site so that you can select what works best for you within those parameters.

My teaching & performance background:             

After returning from tour in 2010, I decided to try to put my talents to more use. Beginning slowly with several private students, I grew comfortable with the new calling before throwing myself headfirst into becoming an integral Girls Rock Camp Austin volunteer every possible session for the next four years. After coaching hundreds of young girls the thrill and empowerment of singing, songwriting, working with a band, and performing, I felt I'd found my niche. The "you-can-do-anything" ethos of camp raised my spirits immensely, and I set out to share my hard-earned knowledge with whomever was willing to learn. In 2012, I was honored to join the staff of University of Texas' adjunct program Austin Live Music Academy as its sole vocal instructor until 2014.

My own private instruction of classical voice began in 2000, during my childhood in Southern California. Trained by several esteemed singers, such as soprano Carol Neblett of Metropolitan Opera fame, I pursued vocal study through college, participating in vocal competitions and attending prestigious youth programs such as Chapman University's Songfest and Boston University's Tanglewood Summer Institute. My passion for chamber and choral music saw me through a rather short stint at Chapman University for Music Performance, before I accepted an indie record deal and dropped out in 2007 to record my debut album, the critically acclaimed Orange Days on Lemon Street.

Herein lies the dichotomy of what many consider my strongest musical trait: it's as though overnight, an aspiring full-lyric soprano turned in her Copland and Fauré scores for an acoustic guitar. My "popular" style of singing maintains the pure, focused quality from the many years of classical study, without the rigidity that tends to pigeonhole many classical or music theatre vocalists when attempting other styles. My songwriting and live performances undoubtedly benefit from this background as well, with songs like Were My Sweetheart to Go...'s "If I" (which features lush jazz-influenced harmonic movement, and a heartwarming mimicry of the dulcet warblings of 1930s and -40s chanteuses), or even more notably, my rock-cabaret-inspired cover of Bizet's "L'amour est un oiseau rebelle" (or "Habañera"), which I performed live in-studio at Los Angeles' KCRW tastemaking program Morning Becomes Eclectic in 2009.

I have released two albums (with a third nearly complete), appeared as a background vocalist on a multitude of albums for other artists, toured extensively, and play frequently throughout Austin - of course performing my own music, but more often, singing jazz in clubs, performing at churches or wedding events, and as an auxiliary instrumentalist and vocalist for other original and cover bands in town. My songs have been featured on several TV shows, including Private Practice, One Tree Hill, Castle, Damages, Crash, and others. I have performed live once in KUT's Studio 1A, and twice on Morning Becomes EclecticLast Call with Carson Daly has called me a guest twice, and I even appeared on Season 2 of NBC's smash-hit show The Voice, where I was a member of Team Blake Shelton.
I thrive on helping students find their own unique voice the way I did - by using important fundamental technique but also experimenting to find what works best for my voice and the applications in which I typically use it.
My background provides me the ability to implement the techniques and idealogy of my classical training through the lens of my "pop" and jazz career - making my pedagogy singular and my motive sincere - to make you the best singer you can be. (And stand out from the crowd, of course.)
